Re-pitching the Organ

The Challenge

The original organ wast not at standard concert pitch as introduced in 1939 leaving the choir unable to utilise the great instrument in accompaniment to orchestral recitals. While the choir made do with a separate smaller portable organ in such circumstances, this was a waste of such a wonderful instrument that was at the core of the Cathedrals music for centuries.

The Solution

£350,000 was raised to re-pitch the organ into standard concert pitch, allowing it to be used in accompaniment of an orchestra. The adjustment, by a half a semi-tone was enough to bring it back into musical alignment and allow beautiful music to be heard again within the Cathedral.
